Brooker Swan River Horse Trials

Brookleigh are once again an event sponsor of the internationally accredited Brooker Swan River Horse Trials held at Brookleigh over the weekend of October 17th and 18th.

The event provides an affordable day out for the family and is great entertainment even for those not interested in horses. Children love to watch the show jumping, cross-country and dressage and in particular enjoy watching other children compete. Riders range from Olympians to those just starting out.

Adults will enjoy a refreshment in the beer garden, or wandering through the trade village (equestrian and rural). You can bring your own picnic or there are food stands and coffee.

Entry on the Sunday (cross-country and show jumping finals) for the public costs $10 per car including programme. Entry on the Saturday (dressage and show jumping) is free. Programmes $3 each.

"In these days of fast food, fast living and quick turnover, horses, just like people, are suffering from the physical and mental stress of such an unnatural way of life.  But unlike people, horses cannot speak for themselves, seek an alternative lifestyle, nor benefit from a counselling session to get over mental problems.  And, in this world of quick results and unrealistic expectations, there are few voices to champion their cause."   Manolo Mendez

One such voice is Manolo Mendez.

Manolo has been involved in the training of horses since his early teens and he attained the rank of second in charge of training horses and riders in the classical principles of equestrian art, at the Royal School in Jerez, Spain. Manolo is the consummate trainer of horses and 'pure' dressage is his first love because he believes it offers him the greatest challenge. His ability to connect with a horse verges on the uncanny and Manolo places great emphasis on in-hand training, as it encourages the horse to relax and focus on you. This is an important element in building correct muscle fitness and teaches the rider timing and feel which is so crucial in good riding.

Manolo's method of training helps you achieve elegance and 'flow' in riding, which can only happen when both horse and rider are working as one, and are relaxed and happy in their work together.

Brookleigh is delighted to welcome Manolo, who is holding a clinic here on the 6th - 8th October.

In his clinics Manolo covers such topics as:

Handling and ground work for the young horse

Getting the basics right from the beginning with emphasis on correct muscle development  and gymnastic training

Problem solving from incorrect training

Dressage training from Preliminary to Grand Prix level

In hand training for Grand Prix movements
